Girlfriend Lunch Out
While you know I’m not a big fan of typical fast food, I really do like having healthier BUT convenient options when I’m out and about. Whether I’m on a road trip or forgot my lunch, it’s great to see more fast food places incorporating some healthier options.
A few days ago a girlfriend and I tried out some new salads from Wendy’s.
This fabulous girl is one of my roommates, but somehow we never get to spend a lot of time together and seem to pass each other as one of us heads out the door, so it was really fun to take some time out of our busy schedules and just have a relaxed lunch together. Wendy’s has three new flavours including the Asian Cashew Chicken, BBQ Ranch Chicken and Taco Supremo Salad. My friend chose the BBQ Ranch chicken and I picked the Asian Cashew Chicken. I loved that my salad had edamame in it too…something you don’t normally expect from typical fast food. Mmm…
We’re both full-time students who also work, so the whole lunch we basically just dreamed about college being done and what we were going to do with our summers.
I have a super long, ridiculous list that includes everything from mastering the elbow handstand, painting the biggest oil painting I’ve ever done, and having too many bonfires and BBQs to count with friends…
My roommate talked about running her half marathon and going to her sister’s wedding…
It’s pretty much going to be the most magical summer ever. I’m excited…
Back to the salads…I didn’t know this but Wendy’s was the first restaurant to bring the salad bar to quick service customers more than 30 years ago. Yay! Way to go Wendy’s! In my opinion, real fast food should definitely be about the salads! These new salads are 50% lower in fat grams, 29% lower in sodium, and 61% lower in saturated fat…that’s happy. Also, if you want to reduce the caloric content even more, just use a little less dressing!
I liked that their salads are prepared fresh in the restaurants every day, and when we placed our order each salad is topped with warm chicken or chili. Also, what makes them different from other fast food restaurants is that they serve both half and full sized portions, slices their tomatoes, cucumbers, and red peppers by hand in the restaurant, and uses 100% premium all white chicken breast meat that is freshly grilled on site.
These are the salads that my roomie and I tried.
Asian Cashew Chicken
- Spicy
- Not your typical canned fruit and ginger dressing
- Uses on trend ingredients such as fire roasted edamame, fresh red peppers and cucumbers, a lettuce blend of 11 different kinds of greens and a light Asian Chili Vinaigrette dressing
- Delicious and nutritious- and only 370 calories!
BBQ Ranch Chicken (this one was my favourite!)
- Savory backyard BBQ in a bowl
- Uses premium ingredients that you see around your grill, such as fire roasted corn, freshly diced tomatoes, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and a honey BBQ sauce.
- Served with a BBQ Ranch dressing, made with real buttermilk, parmesan cheese, ancho chili peppers, honey and brown sugar.
This was one of the best moments in my week so far…catching up with special girlfriends is wonderful…and just to pause and relax for an hour or two is so great. Maybe you want to grab a girlfriend and try out this lunch? You probably do (wink)!

I got the BBQ Ranch one right when it came out. Mine didn’t have bacon on it and instead of giving me the packet of BBQ Ranch, they just squirted one BBQ sauce on top. Umm? Luckily I was going right home and had some ranch I could add to it. I want to try it again with all of the correct ingredients now that it’s been on the menu for a while.
It makes me want to go to Wendy’s to try out their salads! Great post!
It’s so nice that you and your roommate finally had some time to go out to lunch together. I have trouble making plans with my close friends these days because our schedules are hectic. It makes it even more special when we can get together.
I love girl time! If I was out on the road and needed food I would definitely pick up a salad like this from Wendys.
While I am glad to see fast food restaurants have salad options, they still make me sad because sometimes they can be just as unhealthy. I also hate how you think that their grilled chicken is sinless but… It’s full of added ingredients that are just not necessary!!! :( What ever happened to just a chicken breast grilled with olive oiL?!?!
