Little Goals All the Time

First of all, I loved reading all your comments on Project Morning Person! For all you early birds that commented with your fantastic tips, thank you – I’m sure I’ll need every single tip you posted! For all you night owls, I’m with you and it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who feels like they’ve gone into shock every morning.

I wanted to chat a little bit with you about goals. I’m a HUGE goal setter. Ever since I was a young teenager, I’d write down my goals for the day – every single day. For me, lists, notebooks, and calendar are vital to remind me of my goals and keep me focused.

Reminder 01

(I even have a table painted with chalkboard paint so I can write myself notes there…)

Some of my goals are big, but most of them are big goals broken down to very small ones. If I were just to say my goal was to write for a magazine, that wouldn’t get me anywhere. It’s vague and unfocused. I would break down the goal into dozens of small goals (write pitches, weed out ideas till I have a couple great pitches, email companies, and on and on…) and then give it a go – one little goal at a time.

Here are some of my goals for the remainder of August:

1. Run my first ever trail run

I’ve done 5ks, 10ks, 1/2 marathons, and even a marathon, but they’ve all been road races. This one is going to be a new experience for me as I try running 14k in the hilly woods. I’m doing this one with two of my brothers the week after next. I think some of my nieces and nephews might even be doing the 1k. I’ve got such a sporty family (grin).

2. Keep up with Project Morning Person

I’ve put a printout calendar for August on the wall so I can highlight the days when I got up when I was supposed to. Almost every box is highlighted. Almost. By the end of August, I’ll be one of those people who get up at 5:30 or 6:00 (I hope!).

3. Beat my pushup score

Pushups are horrible. In January of this year, I only had one guy pushup to my name (yes, we all know this is very sad), but then I started to really work on it and got to 10 guy pushups (on my toes). The other day I decided to challenge myself to 20 and guess what?! I did it! I actually could’ve gone longer. In a couple weeks I’m going to see if I can get to 30.

4. Finish reading a couple books

One book is finished and now I just have “Worship – the Ultimate Priority” (by John McArthur) to complete. I love reading such refreshing spiritual books in my quiet time. So far, it’s been an awesome book!

5. Drink ProSculpt before my morning workouts

One word for this product. LOVE. I’m only talking about it because I am enamored with it (not paid or compensated at all to mention it). GNC’s ProSculpt tastes fabulous and gives me so much energy for workouts. I used to dread my morning fitness routine, but I don’t anymore because I have energy for it. I totally look forward to a glass of this punch in the morning (only 30 calories per serving as well)!

6. Have spirulina every day

The supplement I love the best is spirulina. I’m now having it every day and I LOVE it. It really seems to be a very healing food. I have more energy, my skin is better, and I just feel better. Speaking of spirulina, Energy Bits just sent me a sample of their spirulina tabs. They’re supposed to supply instant energy (one ingredient, one calorie per tab!), increase endurance, boost alertness, give protein, help with weight loss, and lower blood pressure. I had them the other day in my workout and noticed it helped with energy. LOVE it.

The only con is someone noticed my lips were a little green. However, I learned that if people don’t like my lips green that’s their problem (haha, just kidding!).

Have you got some of your goals for August accomplished yet? What were they? How many pushups can you fitness pros do?

Great post! Making little goals can definitely make those bigger ones seem much more achievable! I tend to set a lot of fitness and nutrition goals for myself and I’m still working towards many of them including 5 consecutive kipping pull ups in CrossFit and I’m midway through the 21 day no sugar detox!

  2. Angela @ The Chicken Scoop

OOh I need to look into that GNC stuff. I workout first thing (barely awake even!) and even though I don’t like to depend on supplements, I might make an exception for this one!

  3. Miz

    YOGA YOGA YOGA HERE.

the yword is my entire august goal.

  4. Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean

my goal is to finish a few books for fun as well! i’ve been slacking!

  5. Jill @ Fitness, Health and Happiness

I’m an avid goal setter too! Big, little and in between. The goals keep me motivated and moving forward. I have Spirulina daily. First, I used the powder which was difficult. It doesn’t work well with all recipes and just eating a TBS was out of the question. Now I have enerybits!! Review coming soon :)

I’d guess I can do somewhere between 20-30 push-ups on my toes. Thanks to P90X and X2!

  6. Kierston

Good luck with your goals! I have no idea how many pushups I can do! lol

  7. Amanda @ Run Principessa

Project Morning Person will destroy me. The calendar is a great idea!!

  8. Sarah Kay Hoffman

I love your “little” goals. I set small goals all the time. I’ve really started to become more focused on SMART goals, and just setting a ton of small goals all the time. Great post! Keep on keepin’ on…:)

  9. Noelle McKenzie

Good luck with your first first ever trail run! It’s always good to have a starting point. I love Energy Bits- we’ve tried them ourselves!

My goals for the rest of August seem endless because I’m always adding! But here are a few
    – find a BIGGER apartment October 1st that is affordable
    – start pitching more to magazines and brands we use and like
    – Take Kern to Miami for his first time and check out some agencies while we’re there
    – Take at least one more trip to the beach!

I love setting goals it keeps me focused like you said. And I feel so accomplished when I’m able to cross things off the list

  10. Chris Donnelly

Great job with accomplishing your goals!

I’m a big fan of HUGE goals but with the understanding that it’ll come incrementally. My Ironman training and now getting faster and stronger with Crossfit is a Week by Week process.

  11. Meredith @ Dare You to

Sounds like you’re on top of your goals! Good luck with the train run.

  12. Jen

Setting goals is something I forget about quite a bit. But it’s something I preach to my students all of the time! Ugh! I see a blog post coming up for me. Thanks for the inspiration! & you go girl with the pushups!

  13. Leonor

I want to be better at push-ups too! It’s a move that I’ve always ignored, but is so good!

  14. shannonmarie (rawdorable)

My goals are just to get readjusted to the new school year and get the house back in order after having both kids home all summer. Maybe I should add push ups to the list. I can do about 30 or 40. There’s definitely room for improvement. I’d really like to work on pull ups with my son. He needs to be able to do them in gym class and I haven’t attempted one in years.
