Superfood Spotlight – Spirulina and Why It’s Cool
When I was a teenager, all I pretty much ate was raw food and I loved experimenting with new foods like cacao nibs, lucuma, goji berries, and maca. It was such an adventure and I loved how I felt when I incorporated more superfoods into my diet. Since then, I’ve become a lot more balanced with my diet and I don’t exclusively eat raw foods (actually, now I don’t think I eat enough raw foods…so lately I’ve been trying to amp it up).
Anyway, one superfood I have heard so much about, but never tried, is spirulina.
So when I got the opportunity through FitFluential to try it out I was super excited. I love using superfoods in my diet – especially in smoothies. I know it’s great for energy and who can’t use more of that?!
Okay, so what’s so great about spirulina?
- It’s actually considered to be one of the world’s most powerful superfoods.
- It’s ridiculously high in protein – it’s 60-65% protein (compared to say fish, which is up to 35% protein)
- It’s very high in chlorophyll – which builds healthy blood, promotes better circulation, and helps reduce inflammation – so basically it helps everything…I think of chlorophyll as liquid energy
- Boosts energy
- Heals your body
- Helps you deal with cravings – less cravings for junk food
- Boosts immunity
- Detoxes your body (even helps with weight loss!)
So it’s kind of a superhero food – with crazy protein, energy, healing properties, and immunity boosting powers. I’m all over it.
I had so much fun exploring this site called the Spirulina Junkie – about a girl who’s so crazy about spirulina that she devotes a whole blog to it. It’s got fantastic recipes (which I will be trying!), reviews, photos, and blog posts. She even has an e-book just chock full of recipes.
They sent me Astaxanthin (more about that in a minute) and some spiruluna supplements.
I think the spirulina is going to be my new magic energy pill. My fellow FitFluential ambassador Jessie Ann even mentioned that she grew up taking a tablet under the tongue to stop cravings for junk food…and it worked.
Seriously though…isn’t that green pretty? I know it sounds weird, but I love green foods…the colour of green just speaks of life and health.
One of my favourite things to do with superfoods of the algae family is mix it with grapefruit and Truvia. Oh my goodness. I know it looks really odd, but it’s really good. That right there, is superhero food.
I also get to try this Astaxanthin, which is one of the most powerful antioxidants ever. I thought that was blueberries’ claim to fame, but I guess this stuff wins. It helps heal your body after exercise (great for us active people), supports joints and immune system, promotes anti-aging, supports eye health, and even supports your skin when you’re in the sun. Yo, I’ll take it.
And there’s more…tonight (Monday, June 4th) there will be a super fun twitter chat at 8 PM (CST) about all these superstar foods. I hear there are some fantastic prizes…like really! Be sure to follow @supernutrient and @suzycohen so you don’t miss anything and use the hashtag #SuperNutrients
FitFluential LLC compensated me for this campaign. All opinions are from my very own head. I am super stoked about using these products.
Have you tried spirulina? What other superfoods have you had experience with? What’s your favourite one?

I’ve actually never tried spirulina but it sounds like I’d better look for it next time I’m at my health food store.
all raw foods? Wow! I would like to try spirulina sometime!
started taking mine today! looking forward to chatting tonight!
I read about it before, but have since forgotten about spirulina, will have to check it out.
I love spirulina, and so does Hayden. We usually add it to smoothies. Hayden even took a spirulina face pic in honor of Courtney (of Spirulina Junkie) once.
My husband saw something about spirulina on Dr. Oz (he doesn’t usually watch but caught part of it) and he wanted to try it. Apparently its just fantastic for you! I just didn’t know what to do with it so thanks for the links!
