Sweet Tart Smoothie
I have very sweet childhood memories. Really sweet.
Such as going down the street to the local drug store tightly clutching four quarters in my sweaty palm…imagining all that I would buy with it. Would be it gummies, chocolate, sour cherries, or gum? I remember such sweet agony trying to decide between coco-cola bottles or fuzzy peaches. But one of my favourites was “Sweet Tarts”…little hard candies made of pressed sugar powder. You could suck on them a loooong time and they lasted forever.
Meanwhile, while I was salivating in the candy aisle, my big brother was carefully putting every quarter and loonie straight into his bank account. Yup. That’s the difference between us. He’s smart and plans for the future. I am impulsive and not…as smart. But, I swear…I’ve grown up quite a bit.
Hey, I don’t even buy candy anymore! Except for a little bit of chocolate. Actually…a lot of chocolate. Nevermind.
In other news…guess what!!! I finally got on the band wagon and acquired a Facebook page for Colourful Palate! Yay! I don’t know why it took me forever to get around to it! If you enjoy my blog and want extra Colourful Palate love, articles I like, updates, or just want support my site I’d love it SO much! Now…let’s get to my new recipe!
I’m so excited about it…it tastes like the “Sweet Tarts” I was crazy about as a kid. I got warm fuzzies while I was drinking it yesterday morning and realized that I needed to share it with you all. It would be selfish not to. Who knew you could make a healthy version! Kids will love this one!
Sweet Tart Smoothie
- ¾ cup almond milk*
- 2 tbsp. cranberries
- ¾ cup organic strawberries (frozen)
- ½ banana (frozen)
- ½ lemon, juiced
- 1 tsp. maca powder (opt)
- 1 scoop protein powder (opt)
- 1 tbsp. chia seeds (opt)
- 4 ice cubes
*I used this almond milk recipe!
Blend all the ingredients…and then if you are adding chia seeds like I did, add them for a few seconds at the end. I like them not completely blended up. Serves 2.
I love how you can hide some super nutritional things you’d never eat by itself in a shake. Brilliant way to get your family healthy without them even knowing it. I added some burdock powder (just a tiny bit) in mine as well.
Tastes just like liquid candy…mmmmmm.
Nutritional Info (per serving, without protein and maca): Cals: 100. Fat: 4g, Sodium: 69mg, Fiber: 5.5g, Sugars: 7g, Protein: 3g
Oh, and guess what came in the mail?
I recently won a little giveaway from Carissa (another Carissa blogger! Who knew?) at Fit2Flex. I got 5 bags of “Food Should Taste Good” chips.
I’m kind of excited because I had no idea that there was such a thing as chocolate chips! And nervous…that I’ll eat the whole bag by myself.
Thankfully I have a sister who doesn’t let me do such things. We share a lot of our stuff…sometimes even our chocolate. And our clothes. Gum. (No! Like a package of gum, not each piece!) She’s already asked to try my chocolate chips. After much deliberation, I’ve decided to share. It’s only right.
Oh, and another that gets happy…when I get samples from people! Thanks Quaker and Vega! So fun trying new foods!
What was your favourite childhood candy? Any fun ideas for other candy based flavours for me to make?

I used to love sweet tarts! Sometimes I liked to bite into them, after sucking on them for a few, to get that blast of tart that makes you wince your eyes and pucker your lips :)
This recipe looks great. And can’t believe it’s healthy, I thought you were going to crush up the candy and sprinkle in ^_~

This looks so satisfying and delicious. I never would have guessed it’s as healthy as it is! Amazing!
The cranberries in this smoothie ROCKS the house!
This looks so incredible. I’ve been experimenting with different combos of smoothies. I’m definitely going to try this one. I love that it’s only 100 calories! It’s so awesome how vegan food is like that. Few calories, all the rich taste and body, highly nutritious and zero guilt! :) Sharon
mmm… Sweet Tart Smoothie. I love cranberries in my smoothies and frozen fruit. I even go so far as to freeze some of my nut milk or sometimes an entire can (shaken) of coconut milk in an ice cube tray so I don’t dilute ANY of the deliciousness. Plus I think you should share your chocolate chips with everyone. :-)
Yes! As mentioned on twitter sweet tarts were my absolute favorite as a kid! Still love them, not gonna lie – but this shake seems much more grown-up and healthy :-) And welcome to Facebook! Just liked your page!
